Girls Middle School Basketball
So close… - January 14
reported by Camille Darrell
The game against Tri-City held high hopes for another win, but sadly, this game did not fulfill the dream. The girls tried as hard as they could to stay in range, but the other team's defense fought harder.
What seemed liked a fun game turned more and more towards the deep end with many fouls and rough play. Still trying their best, the girls pulled through as much as they could, ending with their first loss in a 23-35 game. Some girls got pulled out, hurt, and with a damper on their spirits, but all in all they kept smiles on their faces as they left Tri-City’s gym.
There will be more games to come, and they’re ready for the worst the other teams can bring!
Never Leave Until the Game is Over... - January 11
Thanks to Camille Darrell, the Middle School girls are still perfect at 3-0. Down 21-18 with only seconds on the clock, she sank a three-point shot to tie the game at 18-all. Fouled on the play, Camille stepped to the line and calmly sank the winning free throw to finish off a surprising victory over Centerplace. Buy that girl some french fries!
Victory over KSD - November 30
reported by Alicia Whitson
Our season has begun with a victory! On November 30, the Mustangs played the Jackrabbits of Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD.) Though KSD has beaten Midland in the past, we started the game with a surprising lead. Our first two points were scored by Camille Darrell, and it only went up from there. Basket after basket was sunk, and by the end of the game, all six members of the team had made at least one basket. Defense was strong too, as KSD only scored 6 points to our 47.
Sarai Rodriquez says that the win was “empowering.”
“It made me feel like we knew what we were doing,” says Jewel Janke.
Hopefully this game is an indication of how the rest of the season will play out! We'll just have to wait and see.
Coach biographies (2010-2011)
Kim Resz, Head coach: This is Kim's second year coaching the Middle School Girls Basketball team. Last year was not only a learning experience for the girls, but for her as well. Kim truly enjoys working with and teaching these young ladies the fundamentals of the game, while encouraging not only the physical, but the mental aspect of the sport.
Kim says, "I believe that every player has something to offer to the team; wins and losses don’t matter as long as we do our best. I hope that in the short amount of time I spend with these young ladies to not only foster a respect for the game, but to emphasize the importance of teamwork and relationships – always putting God first and using basketball as a witness to show our love for Him."
Basketball has always been one of her favorite sports both to play and to watch. Kim started playing basketball at a very young age, learning from her dad who was also a player and a coach. March is one of Kim's very favorite times of the year; she can be found cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks and the Wichita State Shockers!
