Midland Honors Retiring School Board Chair

Midland recently recognized retiring school board chair Diane Jacob for her years of service with Midland. Mrs. Jacob served as board chair during two critical times in Midland's existence. The first was in 1997 when Midland was in the transitioning years from a 10-grade school to a full 12-grade academy. The second period included the recent accreditation visit that resulted in a clear six-year accreditation for the school.

As a sign of appreciation, the board presented Diane with a rolling business case emblazoned with the Midland logo, and filled with a variety of MAA-themed gifts.

Mrs. Jacob and her husband Mike will continue to be strong supporters of the Midland community. Many thanks for all your effort in our school's behalf.

Science Teacher Jason Donovan Receives $2000 Grant

The ING Insurance Group recently awarded Jason Donovan a $2000 Unsung Heroes grant. Each year, educators submit applications for ING grant money by describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Each project is judged on its innovative method, creativity, and the ability to positively influence students.

As one of the 100 winners for 2010, Mr. Donovan will also be awarded additional grant money if his proposal is chosen as one of the top three projects nationwide.

According to the ING website, Mr. Donovan's winning "Midland's Watershed Protection Program," is part of a pond ecology project. The program will impart concepts of conservation biology that support the schools value of investing energy in actively caring for people and the environment...

Students will be involved in restoring and cleaning up the local habitat. Additionally, they will learn about the flora and fauna of Kansas by studying the wetland's plants and animals. The chemistry students will take water samples from the pond on campus to measure salinity, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, acidity, alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen and hardness. The findings will be shared with the biology class where students will learn why some plants or animals can or cannot exist in the watershed region.

Congratulations, Jason, on another innovative science project - one that was even covered by the local newspaper! As one of our students said recently, "Science gets better every year. We have a good science lab and a teacher who is excited about trying new ways of teaching."
