Menus, flickering tea-lights, four small tables, hosts, servers, and readers were all part of the 3rd & 4th graders’ Book Café on April 25, 2010. “We opened our cafe' so we could do something special for the Kinders, practice reading with expression, and gain some experience working in cooperative groups,” explained Proprietor Mrs. Murphy. (The Book Café will open again soon for the 1st and 2nd grade customers.)

Several pairs of readers arrived in the Kindergarten room early on Monday morning. Each pair selected one Kinder to escort back to the   Book Café. Upon arrival, the Kinder was shown to a table and seated. Soon, a server arrived with a cup of goldfish crackers, and a host presented the Kinder with a menu featuring the two available books for that table. Once the Kinder selected a book from the menu, that book’s reader and the Kinder settled in for an expressive story reading session. The Kinders sat munching their crackers, looking at the pictures and concentrating on their reader.

Books featured at the Book Café included: Caps for Sale; Tacky the Penguin; Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb; Hop on Pop, Go Dog Go, Whistle for Willie, The Doorbell Rang, and Cordurory.

When the reader finished, the reader-pair escorted the Kinder back to Kindergarten and selected another Kindergartener until all the Kinders had visited the café.
