Midland celebrated Senior night for our varsity basketball teams in February 9 ceremonies prior to games vs Sunnydale Academy. For Guys Varsity, Coach K recognized Tanner Finnegan, Brett Trana, Brennan Nelson, and Andrew Red for their many contributions to the team. He also noted that Tanner and Brett have been starters since their Freshman year, with Brett starting every game during his high school career. For more pictures from Senior night, check our photo gallery.

Coach Biographies

Coach Kurtis CowanKurtis Cowan, Head Coach: Coach K returns for his fourth year as Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach. His goal is to stress the importance of kindness, respect, diligence, and perseverance. As these traits are portrayed on the basketball court, he hopes that the students do not just become good athletes, but that they become men. If these traits can be characterized in the midst of a competitive atmosphere, they will carry over into real life. Coach K is excited about the new season and looks forward to working with each player. Off the court, Dr. Cowan practices as a Physical Therapist in the Kansas City area.

Coach Luis GarciaLuis Garcia, Assistant Coach: Coach "Wicho" Garcia returns for his sixth year as a coach for Midland. He started as Midland's assistant JV basketball coach in 2007, when our current seniors were 6th graders. While Coach Cowan was in India during the 2009-2010 basketball season, Coach Garcia ably filled the head coaching role.
While attending Sunnydale Adventist Academy, he was a member of the Spartans basketball team during his senior year. It was also at this time that he met not only Coach Cowan, but Coach's little sister, Kristin. Romance followed, and they were married in 2005. Kristin attends just about every Midland games, and can be found running the camera, recording stats, or whatever else needs to be taken care of.
Born and raised in Kansas City, MO, Coach Carcia attended Cedarvale Jr. Academy and then went to Sunnydale Adventist Academy for 11th and 12th grade.
