Mr. Hutchison is not just Midland's music director, he is also sponsor of Midland's poetry club. He recently had his students create villanelles, and two of his favorite entries are included here.

A life hidden in the evergreen
And only the dewdrops to make it clean
The forest shades life to remain unseen

The mushrooms in the darkness glean
So that they may not wither
A life hidden in the evergreen

In the branches birds their feathers preen
While on the ground snakes slither
The forest shades life to remain unseen

But leaves will fall and death is seen
So what winter now hath deliver
A life hidden in the evergreen

The cedars still remain ordained with green
And the deer eat bark bitter
The forest shades life to remain unseen

Spring comes and the ground grows new cuisine
And life is hidden - no longer to whisper
A life hidden in the evergreen
The forest shades life to remain unseen

-Michaela Raygor

Before this cold winter cause hope to expire
With buckets of freeze putting stop to flame
Listen to the warming tongue of fire

With choreographed steps, it dances as a liar
Saying warmth when nothing of warmth became
Before this cold winter cause hope to expire

Oh, but that this powerful tune was for hire
To build with its song, create, not maim
Listen to the warming tongue of fire

Was ever the need for hope so dire
As now, we remember light more than a flame
Before this cold winter cause hope to expire

Look into the smoke, with all your desire
Understand that burning is never tame
Listen to the warming tongue of fire

See it as a fearsome fighter
Pushing out chill with fanning flame
Before this cold winter cause hope to expire
Listen to the warming tongue of fire
