Classroom overview (December 7-11)I hope you had a fun-filled Thanksgiving time with family and friends. The next few weeks will really fly by until Christmas break. There are several calendar items you need to know about that are coming up.
Field Trip – Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 10:00. We will be going on a field trip to the production of the “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. We will leave the school at 9:00 and return at 12:00. I would like to have three parents attend. Please let me know if you would be available to help with this trip. This is a live theater production about the Herdman kids. They are a rough and tumble bunch who create mayhem wherever they go. Cast in the church’s annual Christmas pageant, they bring their own unique interpretation to the familiar events. Remarkably, they help everyone rediscover its true meaning.
Elementary Christmas Program –Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 6:30. Students typically wear white shirts or blouses and black slacks or skirts. Your child will need to be at school by 6:15.
Elementary Christmas Skating Party – Friday, Dec. 18, at 10:00.
Let’s Give Back! Students in third and fourth grade will be helping out with the gift giving outreach that Mrs. Rincon’s class is doing with the New Haven Food Pantry. Students are being asked to donate a new toy worth $5.00. Over 300 families are served each month. During the month of December, families can also select a Christmas gift for their children. Gifts will need to be brought to the school by Dec. 18.
Bible – We will continue our study of the Fruit of the Spirit. This week we will focus on gentleness.
Language Workshop - This week’s spelling will be lesson 14. Below you will find the word list for lessons 14, and 15. In reading we will be starting the book, George Washington Carver. We will be finishing up our study on nouns in English.
Math – In third grade we continue with multiplication, multiplication, and more multiplication! Fourth grade will also be using their multiplication skill by learning LCF (least common factors) and GCM (Greatest common multiple). These are necessary skills for fractions.
Social Studies – We will focus on the states in the Northeast region. Students will need to know these states for the test on Friday: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont.
Science – We have officially finished out study of plants, animals, and biomes. We made some very cool biome folded booklets. They will be on display in the hall. We will begin our study on the human body. other classes in the school.
Classroom overview (November 16-20)
Yes, that is right…it is November and the Royals won the World Series! So here is some infor about what our week will look like.
Bible Study - This week we continue our study of the Fruit of the Spirit with our focus on kindness. Students will be asked to practice acts of kindness through out the week at home and school. You will receive a sheet asking you to sign any acts of kindness that you observe at home. Our memory verse is, “Be kind and loving to each other. Forgive each other just as God forgave you in Christ.” Ephesians 4:32.
Math – Third grade continues with multiplication. We will spend this week learning our 7 and 8 facts. Fourth grade will continue with division. We will learn the actual process of long division.
Language Arts Workshop – We will do Lesson 11 in spelling. Fourth grade will read a short story called “The Disguise”. This is a story that takes place over 100 years ago about a young Korean girl and her family’s quest to educate their daughter. Third Grade will read a short story called “Champions of the World.” This is a story of the persistence and courage of a winning little league baseball team. We will continue our study of nouns in English. We will learn about proper nouns.
Science - We are starting a new chapter on Biomes. We will learn about living, biotic, and nonliving, abiotic, factors of various ecosystems.
Social Studies - We are finish up our chapter on the factors that have built a strong America. Our focus will be on the financial workings of our country.
Please keep your student reading at least 15-20 minutes five nights a week. They need to continue working towards their SRC points. Have them continue to practice math facts as well. Thank you, parents!
Classroom overview (October 5 - 23)
I will keep our newsletter short this week and get right to our week.
Bible Study - We will continue learning the books of the Old Testament. This week we will focus on Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, and Joel. This week we will learn about the first “Fruit of the Spirit”, love. Our memory verse is “This is my command: that you love on another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
Language Arts Workshop – We will be reading the book, The Story of George Washington Carver. This book will tie in with our science study on plants. This week we will learn the spelling words in Lesson 8. You will find the spelling words for Lesson 8 and Lesson 9 listed below. THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING WORDS THE WEEK OF FALL BREAK! In English we will begin writing personal narratives.
Math - Both third and fourth will continue working on multiplication. Third graders will need to know the twos and threes multiplication facts by the end of this week. They know the twos fairly well so the real focus will be on the threes facts. Multiplication.com is a great site for them to practice. I am not so much concerned that they do them within a certain time limit. That can add a lot of frustration to learning their facts. But I do want them to practice, practice, and practice so they become very familiar with them. It will be crucial to their success when we get to longer multiplication, division, and fractions.
Social Studies – This week we will begin the chapter, “We All Live Together”. In this chapter we will explore how people of all cultures make up our great country. We will learn that each American has a strong voice in how the government of the nation is elected, organized, and run. We will also understand that everyone has basic rights that are protected by our Constitution.
Science – This is going to be a really fun week in science. We will learn about plant seeds and plant reproduction. We will examine a variety of seeds and start our own plant. We will learn about the plant cycle including germination and pollination of various plants, flowering, cones, and mosses.
Classroom overview (September 28-October 2)
JUST A REGULAR WEEK! Seems like it has been awhile since we have had just a regular week of school days. Here is a look at what we will be doing this week….
Bible Study – We will continue learning our books of the Bible. This week we will review last week’s books, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Solomon, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. We didn’t get a lot of time to practice them because of our testing schedule. We will also learn Galatians 5:22,23. This is the fruit of the spirit text and many of the students already know this verse from a song they learned in Mrs. Prosser’s room. Our spiritual focus will be on how to be more like Jesus. The main objective for this lesson is that keeping Jesus’ commandments does not save us; but we show our love for Him by making choices that honor them.
Math – Both third and fourth grades will take an end-of-the-chapter test over chapter 2 of their math book and begin chapter 3. Fourth grade will learn two digits by two-digit multiplication first by using base ten break apart and partial products. Third grade will begin looking at the process of multiplication as it relates to addition and making equal groups. This is such an important chapter for third grade as it establishes the foundation for multiplication mental strategies. PLEASE KEEP YOUR KIDDOS PRACTICING THEIR MULTIPLICATION FACTS!
Language Arts Workshop – This week we will be finishing our book, Gold Star for Eric. In English we learned how to write a friendly letter. This week we will learn the proper way to address an envelope. Each student has written a letter to their grandparent(s) and will bring home an envelope containing the letter to be addressed and sent. Thank you parents for your help with this project. This week we will learn how to write a personal narrative story. In spelling we will learn the words in lesson seven and complete the lesson.
Science – We will continue our study on plants learning about different kinds of plants. We will study the characteristics of angiosperm, deciduous, gymnosperm, evergreen, and various moss and fern plants.
Social Studies – Learning about the various natural resources that make each United States region special will be our focus this week.
Classroom overview (September 21-25)
We had a blast on our rainy field trip to the Agricultural Museum in Bonner Springs. The folks out there made sure we enjoyed all of the activities in spite of the rain. A very BIG thank you to parents Tara Hallock, Travis Renfro, Hanne Beldin, Jerri Donahue, and Carissa Wilson for their help on the field trip.
IOWA ASSESSMENTS THIS WEEK! IA will be administered Monday through Thursday beginning at 8:30 until 10:30 each morning. On Friday, fourth grade students will take CogAt, a cognitive achievement assessment. (See these two links about Cognitive Genesis, our denominational educational cognitive studies, and the CogAt link)
I have also included an interesting article called, Parent Tips to Help Prepare Your Student for Standardized Testing. Although there is some disagreement among many parents, educators, school leaders, and even policymakers about the kinds of tests administered and how the scores should be used, in order to help your child do their best it is important to be supportive of your child's efforts. Also during this time I will minimize homework and tests. Some classes will not be taught every day.
Language Arts - Last week we learned how to write a friendly letter like Eric did in our book, A Gold Star for Eric. Eric wrote a letter to his grandpa telling him about all of the fun he is having at camp. This week we will be writing a letter to our grandparents or someone special telling them about some of the fun learning we have done at school this year. We will spend some time also learning how to address an envelope. Each student will bring home a letter and a blank envelope to be addressed and sent. We will NOT do a spelling unit this week so students can just focus on doing their best each day on testing.
Math – Fourth graders will continue working on multiplication and third graders will work on subtraction. Both groups will focus on re-grouping by place value.
Bible – We will learn the next six books of the Bible. That will include: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Solomon, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
Social Studies – We will be looking at the rain cycle and how it affects a regions climate. We will also begin looking a regional resources.
Science – We will learn about specialized plant cells and how cells work together to form various tissues.
Classroom overview (September 14-18)This is an exciting week for our class. This Friday we will go on our first field trip. We will be going to the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, KS. We will be leaving the school at 9:30 am. Each student will need to wear a Midland t-shirt and bring a sack lunch with drink; we will have a picnic lunch at the center.
What our week looks like:
Bible Study – Our week will focus on how to be like Jesus by examining “the fruit of the spirit”. We will learn the next six books of the Bible: I Kings, II Kings, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job. We are learning our books by learning the song linked to here.
Language Arts – In reading we will continue our story, A Gold Star for Eric. Ask your child about this tender story of a young boy who is learning about God’s love for him. In handwriting we will continue practicing “over-the-hill” letters o, v, x. In English we will focus on writing with complete subjects and complete predicates. In spelling we will have a unit week. This will be a study of lessons 1-5. There will be no formal spelling test.
Math – Third graders will start chapter 2. We will begin with problem solving and learn about interpreting picture graphs, making picture graphs, and bar graphs. In fourth grade we will learn how to multiply multiple digit numbers using break apart and distributive property of multiplication. We will combine “friendly numbers”. Ex. 24 x 250; (6 x 4) x 250; 6 x (4 x 250); 6 x 1000 =6,000. Easy ;)
Social Studies – We will learn about the effects of climate on different regions of the United States. We will explore each state and why each is common to certain regions.
Science – We will explore the structure of plant cells and how they work. We will also look at plant tissue; xylem and phloem and epidermal tissue. If anyone has an oak tree I would appreciate it if you could send 24 leaves.

School Picture Day, Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Field Trip - Below you will find a field trip permission slip to sign for our upcoming trip. We will be going to the Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Kansas on Friday, September 18. We will leave the school at 9:30. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and drink. We will return to school at 1:00 pm. We will eat a picnic lunch at the center. Several of you have said that you would like to go so it looks like we have all the parent help that we will need.
Bible Study - We will learn the next five books of the Bible this week. That includes: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel. This test will be on Friday, September 11.
Math - Third grade will continue finding the difference between two numbers, or subtraction. They will be taking a chapter 1 test this week. Fourth grade will be looking at two different strategies for multiplying. They will use the distributive property to “break apart” one of the factors. 23 x 8: 8 x (20+3): (8x20)+(8x3); 160+24=184.
Language Arts Workshop – We will learn the words for Lesson 5 in spelling this week. In reading we will continue reading A Gold Star for Eric. Complete and simple predicates will be our focus for English.
Social Studies – We will finish our salt-dough landform maps. The students have done a great job. They will be on display by the end of this week. Please stop by to see them. We will discuss the various types of climate across the various regions of the United States.
Science – Cells and how they work will be our study for this week.
Classroom overview (August 31-September 4)It will be a bit of a busy week ahead. We have a fieldtrip coming up on September 18 to the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame Museum in Bonner Springs, Kansas. You will be receiving more information next week regarding this trip. I will need three parents to join us. It will require most of the day. Let’s take a look at the upcoming week.
Bible Study - We will be learning the first five books of the Old Testament and eventually all 66 books of the Bible. There are several songs on YouTube to help teach the books of the Bible, with links included below. Students will be tested on the first five books this Friday, September 4. They will just say them, not spell them.
Bible Book links
Math – Third grade continue to practice estimating skills in finding the difference. Fourth grade will begin some concepts in algebra. They will examine multiplication problems and look for the missing variable using models. A typical math problem would be: Sue’s dog is 3 times bigger that Ted’s dog. Together the dogs weigh 24 pounds. How big is Ted’s dog? Email me when you have the answer! Students need to continue working on their multiplication facts.
Language Arts – We will continue to read the book, A Gold Star for Eric. In English we are learning the difference between subjects and predicates. This week we will be learning the words in Lesson 4, which are included below as part of lessons 1-5. In handwriting we will continue practicing the “over-the-hill” letters, a, o, g, d.
Social Studies – We will finish up our map skills unit by talking about landforms and making landform maps. Last week we learned about longitude and latitude lines. We located various continents and oceans using a grid of those lines.
Science – We will continue our study on plants. We learned about the difference between a plant cell and an animal cell. We also discovered that they have some similarities. We drew and labeled plant cells. We also observed actual plant cells by looking at an onionskin under a microscope. This week we will learn how plants use sunlight to make food and energy.

OH, and please let me know if you would be able to attend the upcoming field trip as a parent helper. It is best if younger siblings do not come along as it often seems that the parent helper can be distracted with the younger one. Thanks!
Classroom overview (August 24-28)
Bible Study- Our Memory Verse this week is; “Your word is like a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105. The test will be on Thursday, August 27. We will be taking a look at Psalms and Proverbs and learn how the early Bible writers used poetry and prose to help us learn about God.
Language Arts – Listed below are the spelling words for the next three weeks. This week we will learn the words for lesson three. In reading we will begin the book, A Gold Star for Eric. This is a wonderful story about a young boy who struggles in school. Eric finds courage and hope through the help of his “teacher Grandma”. He learns that Jesus has a plan for everyone no matter what his or her situation might be. Each day we will read three chapters in the book. Each chapter is about three pages. For most students this will be very manageable. You might enjoy hearing the story at home as well. Ask your child to read to you each evening.
Math – In third grade we will learn the “break apart” strategy for adding and use place value to add and estimate differences. Here is a link to a YouTube video showing break-apart addition. I teach it in this way, however I show it using a place value chart.
In fourth grade we will be adding and subtracting whole numbers by renaming place values. We will also tackle specialized vocabulary that tells us whether we are to add or subtract in word problems. Please practice multiplication facts NIGHTLY! There are many online games for practice.
Science - We learned the scientific method of investigation last week by predicting and then performing and experiment on how many drops of water will fit on a penny. There were some surprises regarding our prediction. This week we will begin our study on Life Science. Our first lesson is, “What Are Plant Cells Like?” We will draw and label the part of a plant cell. We will observe onion cells under magnification.
Social Studies – This year our book is called Regions. We will be learning about the five major regions of the United States. As we begin our study we will first learn about what makes up a region and the various landforms of each region. Students will create a landform map as part of their study. They may need to work on this map at home this week.
