Host a Foreign Student

Leaving one's family to fly around the world and study in a second language in a foreign land is an intense and life-changing experience for a young person. Families that open their homes and hearts to host one of these adventurers have a unique opportunity to make an impact on a young life.

Midland Adventist Academy looks forward to benefiting from its new relationship with A+ Global Education, Inc. A+, led by a team of dedicated, Christian leaders, has agreed to recruit foreign students for us beginning next year. In addition to arranging academic placement, A+ also recruits local families to host these students and provides fullt-time, local support to the host family and the foreign student along with a monthly stipend to cover expenses associated with hosting. Hosting can be an incredibly rewarding experience for a family.

A+ carefully selects host families based on their desire to host a visiting student and ability to provide a safe, comfortable home and positive cultural experience for you in the United States. People of all ages and from all walks of life volunteer to serve as host families. Grandparents, families with younger children, single-parent families, and traditional two-parent families have all hosted successfully.

If your family is interested in hosting a foreign student full-time, please contact the A+ representative Vicky Karr by e-mail. mind.

Note: Host families contract directly with A+ Global Education, Inc. and not with Midland Adventist Academy.

Spring is Springing

The warming weather and the budding flowers are a good sign that spring is on the way, not to mention that we have now started 4th quarter! Believe it or not, there are less than 10 weeks until graduation. Are you listening, #classof2017?

We hope you are getting used to Daylight Savings time; you'll get that missing hour back next fall during our NEXT school year!

CSC Student Wins the Challenge

Former Midland student Tyler McKinney, now a senior at Pine Forge Academy, was recently awarded $11,000 in scholarships by the Better School, Better World Challenge. BSEA challenged students at Pine Forge to create a 90-second video to explain how they are going to build a better world.

The community was asked to vote for their favorite videos, and the student with the most votes would win the challenge, up to one year of paid tuition and expenses at PSA.

Tyler, a member of Central State’s Linwood Church in Kansas City, MO, won the contest with several thousand votes. (thanks to Outlook magazine and Brittany Winkfield for the information in this story; you can read the full article here on page 18, or watch Tyler's video.) Congrats for a job well done!

A Visit From the Doctor

Our third and fourth graders recently enjoyed a presentation from Dr. Rejane Aragon on our immune system. She shared with the students how our immune systems is always in a "battle" to fight various pathogens that enter our bodies, and how we can keep our immune system strong for future “battles”.

She also told us to follow N.E.W. S.T.A.R.T. to stay healthy and to keep our immune system healthy. In case you're wondering what NEW START stands for, here's a quick rundown:

  • N-trition
  • E-xercise
  • W-ater
  • S-unlight
  • T-emperance
  • A-ir
  • R-est
  • T-rust In God

Parent Satisfaction Highest in Private Schools

Private school parents are significantly more satisfied with the schools their children attend than are parents from other sectors, including public charter schools and public district schools. That finding comes from two new studies released by Education Next, a scholarly journal on school reform published by the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Harvard Program on Education Policy and Governance at the Harvard Kennedy School.

The first study looked at results from a survey, commissioned by Education Next in May and June of 2016, of a nationally representative sample of 1,571 parents with children in school. The second study analyzed results from a survey of over 17,000 families conducted in 2012 by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The second study’s larger sample size allowed for a deeper dive into population subgroups.
