Awards & Scholarships

A number of scholarships and awards are presented to Midland students each year during May. This page contains a brief history of the awards, and the recipients of each since Midland became a full academy in 1998.

John Philip Sousa Award

This award is determined by the high school band director. First established in 1954, it is presented in recognition of superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty, and cooperation. It honors the great American composer and band director, John Philip Sousa.

National School Choral Award

This award is determined by the high school choral director. First established in 1964, it is presented "in recognition of singular merit, achievement and ability, outstanding contributions to the success of the school vocal program, and of an unusual degree of loyalty and cooperation...”

Valedictorian (High School)

This award is presented to the academy senior with the highest cumulative four-year GPA. The student is recognized for their scholastic success, and is given the honor of presenting the Valedictorian's Address on Graduation day.

Michael E. Paradise Award

This award honors Michael Paradise (class of 2001) for his leadership in demonstrating that all students should be treated equally and with respect. It recognizes the senior who best displays those qualities, and participates in a variety of extra-curricular school events.

Caring Heart Award

The Education division of the NAD established this award for Christian service to recognize high school students who demonstrate a personal commitment to active participatory service and witnessing activities and programs.

Principal's Leadership Award

This award honors a Midland senior for their leadership in high school. It was first established in 2011 by Principal Trudy Hoffman. The awards plaque reads "Celebrating those who lead at Midland Adventist Academy."

Keith Vollmer Award

This award honors Mr. Keith Vollmer and his 41 years of service to Midland Adventist Academy. Presented by the Midland Alumni Association, it recognizes the students who best display the qualities that Mr. Vollmer demonstrated in his classroom day after day. It is awarded to an 8th grade graduate moving on to high school, and to a graduating senior. A youtube video presentation describing the award can be found here.

Owen Uhrmacher Memorial Scholarship

This award honors the memory of Owen Uhrmacher, a 13-year Midland student who passed away in 2020. Presented by his family and Midland Adventist Academy, it recognizes a senior who display Christian leadership and plans to attend Union College.

Mr. and Ms. Mustang Athletic Award

This award honors a male and female student athletes who not only excel at the various sports they play, but also are a reflection of Midland as a whole. Academics, sportsmanship, community outreach, leadership, and teamwork are all considered when making this award.

Noah Alexander Rexin Scholarship

This award honors the memory of Noah Rexin, son of Jonathan and Valerie Rexin and brother of Jonah. Noah was born in 1999 with multiple congenital heart defects, and passed away 11 days before his second birthday. It was awarded each year from 2005-2021 to a member of Noah's class of 2017 who strives to overcome adversity, loves life, and lives each day to bring joy and happiness to others by treating them with kindness and respect.

This award recognizes students that have achieved superior scores on the PSAT/NMSQT® test. The highest-achieving students in the National Merit Scholarship Program are named as National Merit Scholars.

  • Finalists and semi-finalists are recognized for academic and extracurricular activities
  • Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index
